The two teams that have finished behind the Oakland Athletics in the AL West in each of the last two seasons have both made significant moves thus far this offseason. Fresh off the Texas Rangers' acquisition of Prince Fielder, the Los Angeles Angels have made a move for an infielder themselves.
According to a variety of reports, the Angels have acquired third baseman David Freese and reliever Fernando Salas from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for outfielders Peter Bourjos and Randal Grichuk
Freese, who was an NL All-Star back in 2012, saw his numbers drop off a tad this past season. He batted .262 with nine homers and 60 runs batted in after belting 20 out of the park the previous season. He will immediately take over as the starting third baseman in Southern California and should find himself batting near the top of the lineup. Salas, a reliever, appeared in 27 games for the Cardinals last season and possesses an ERA in the mid fours. His best season with St. Louis came back in 2011, when Salas tallied a 2.28 ERA and struck out one batter per inning.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals acquire a player in Bourjos who has top-of-the-order potential, but is pretty much a bench player at this point. He hit .274 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 55 games last season. He will act as an extra outfielder for the defending NL Central champions.
According to Baseball Prospectus, St. Louis also acquired the Angels No. 6 overall prospect in Randal Grichuk. The 22-year-old outfielder put up 22 homers and 64 RBIs in AA last season and will likely begin the 2014 season in AAA.
