Chargers 31, Chiefs 0

Philip Rivers threw two touchdowns to Malcom Floyd and the San Diego Chargers kept their hopes of a fifth straight division title alive with a resounding 31-0 victory over the short-handed Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

Mike Tolbert and rookie Ryan Mathews combined to run for 131 yards and two scores, helping the Chargers (7-6) bounce back from a shocking December loss.

Last week’s 28-13 loss to Oakland ended San Diego’s 18-game winning streak in the month and threatened to end its four-year run as AFC West champions.

Kansas City (8-5) was trying to sweep the season series and put the final nail in the Chargers’ coffin. But the Chiefs were hamstrung by the absence of quarterback Matt Cassel, who sat out after undergoing an appendectomy on Wednesday.

With Brodie Croyle under center, the Chiefs looked inept. Kansas City managed a staggering five first downs and 68 total yards.

Croyle was 7 of 17 for 40 yards and the Chiefs finished with a net total of 19 yards through the air. He fell to 0-10 lifetime as a starter.
