Olympic Hockey Preview: Team Finland

While Team Finland is not considered one of the favorites to take home the gold in Sochi, its superior goaltending could make it a dark horse in the tournament.

Unfortunately for the Finns, only one goalie can play at a time. This means that there will be a debate as to whether Antti Niemi or Tuukka Rask will be the starter in net. While Rask will likely be the favorite to land the job, there would not be much of a problem starting Niemi or Kari Lehtonen: the likely third stringer.

Aside from the immense talent between the pipes, Finland is average at forward and on defense.

Mikko Koivu, Valtteri Filppula, Olli Jokinen, Jussi Jokinen and Tuomo Ruutu are a few of the more well-known NHL forwards on the list, but Teemu Selanne and Aleksander Barkov tell a tale of two generations that could be a great storyline in this year's Olympics.

Barkov just turned eighteen this past December. Selanne was shooting his glove out of mid-air with his stick three years before Barkov was born.

Selanne is in the final year of an illustrious career that has spanned two decades. This will almost certainly be his last Olympics and he will look to make a definite impact and go out on top.

Barkov is a rookie with explosive potential. He will likely be putting the Finland jersey on for years and years to come. Can he make an immediate impact as the youngest player in the tournament?

Several players with NHL experience will man the blue line for the Finns, but Philadelphia Flyer Kimmo Timonen will be the veteran leader on the squad. Pittsburgh Penguin Olli Maatta is a young up-and-coming d-man who could also shine in the spotlight of the world's biggest stage.

While this year's Finnish team is drastically different than the one that won silver in Turin in 2006, it still has the potential to be a big surprise in the tournament.
