ACC Championship Game Review: Florida State Blasts Duke

Florida State did what we all expected and eased past Duke to win their second ACC title in a row.

Duke dug their heels in and restricted the Seminoles to just 17 first half point.  However,  the inevitable happened behind the arm of Jamies Winston as the No. 1 ranked team in the nation went on to win 45-7.

Winston finished the game with 330 yards and three touchdowns but did throw two interceptions to a gritty Blue Devils defense.  Wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin continued to catch the eye of scouts up and down the country with 119 receiving yards and two touchdowns of 14 and 54 yards.  Devonta Freeman carried the football 18 times for 91 yards and a touchdown while Winston and Karlos Williams both added scores on the ground.

Duke came into the game knowing they needed to win the turnover battle if they were to stand a slight chance of winning.  The defense forced three turnovers but the offense also gave three away,  two of which came from the arm of Anthony Boone.  The junior quarterback had a rough day and could only manage to complete 20 of his 40 pass attempts for 138 yards and the two picks.  The Blue Devils’ running game didn’t fare much better as they collectively carried the ball for 99 yards on 31 attempts.  Josh Snead did get the underdogs’ lone touchdown on the ground when he rumbled in from five yards out with just over a minute to go.

Everybody knew Florida State would win convincingly and they did.  The loss will not define Duke’s incredible season in which they won ten games and could still be ranked in the end of season polls for the first time since the 60’s.  David Cutcliffe could very well scoop the coach of the year award while his men still have a Bowl game to win.  Florida State on the other hand have a small Bowl of their own,  a national championship encounter with Auburn where.  Good luck to Jimbo Fisher and his fantastic football team.
