Here are the game reviews from the ACC Week 2 match-ups.
Wake Forest 10 Boston College 24
A senior running back-wide receiver duo lifted Boston College to a win over ACC rivals Wake Forest in Week 2. Andre Williams carried the ball 35 times and rumbled for 204 yards and a score whilst Alex Amidon caught five passes for 93 yards and a touchdown. The Eagles restricted Wake Forest to just four third down completions and forced seven punts in what is a solid start to what will be a long season for Boston College.
Florida 16 Miami 21
The Hurricanes knocked off state rivals Florida in what was a sloppy game of football. Quarterbacks from both sides looked erratic throughout as both teams failed to take a handle on the game. Miami running back Duke Johnson was limited to 2.8 yards-per-carry and quarterback Stephen Morris completed less than 50% of his passes. Turnovers ultimately decided the game as Jeff Driskel tossed two costly interceptions in a five turnover game for the Gators.
Middle Tennessee 20 North Carolina 40
North Carolina bounced back strongly from a poor showing in Week 1 against South Carolina with a comfortable win over C-USA outfit Middle Tennessee. Quarterback Bryn Renner threw for 339 yards and a touchdown whilst running back Romar Morris added two more scores on the ground.
South Carolina State 13 Clemson 52
Clemson made easy work of S Carolina St. on the back of last week’s impressive victory over Georgia. Tajh Boyd left the game at HT as he and back-up signal caller Cole Stoudt completed 33 of 43 for 312 yards and three touchdowns. Sammy Watkins saw limited game time as freshman receiver Germone Hopper took the plaudits with two touchdown receptions.
Western Carolina 3 Virginia Tech 45
Logan Thomas continued to struggle as Virginia Tech eased to victory in Week 1. The senior quarterback was picked off twice in a game where he should have been putting his demons from Week 1 to bed. Freshman running back Trey Edmunds proved his impressive performance against Alabama in Week 1 was no fluke as he punched the ball in twice on the ground. The Hokies defense once again lived up to its billing by surrendering just 162 total yards.
Oregon 59 Virginia 10
Virginia were never in this one as Oregon destroyed the Cavaliers on home turf. Junior tight end Jake McGee was a lone bright spot for the home team, catching eight balls from a wasteful David Watford. Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota struggled somewhat through the air, however, the Ducks’ speedy offense gashed Virginia on the ground for 350 yards and six touchdowns.
Old Dominion 10 Maryland 47
Maryland continues to turn heads around the league with another flawless performance. The Terrapins’ offense has started the season very hot, with C.J. Brown showing he is no joker under center. Wide receiver Stefon Diggs caught six balls for 179 yards and a touchdown and running back Brandon Ross had 149 rushing yards and a score.
Duke 28 Memphis 14
David Cutcliffe has got the Blue Devils organised into a proper football team for the first time in years. Jamison Crowder exploded against Memphis recording 11 receptions for 140 yards. The Tigers were in the game until the fourth quarter but two touchdowns from the arm of Brandon Connette ensured Duke started 2-0 for the first time in an age.
Syracuse 27 Northwestern 48
Syracuse’s disappointing start to the season continued with a lacklustre defeat to Northwestern. The ‘Cuse found themselves 20-0 down just inside the second quarter and never looked like mounting a challenge. Quarterback Drew Allen tossed four interceptions before being replaced by sophmore back-up Terrel Hunt late in the game.
Richmond 21 NC State 23
A late field goal from the boot of Niklas Slade saved the blushes of NC State in Week 2. Slade split the uprights from 48 yards with 33 seconds left on the clock. Richmond held a 21-13 lead at half-time but sophmore quarterback Bryant Shirreffs accounted for two touchdowns as the Wolfpack rallied to go 2-0.
