ACC Week Six Review

With conference season in full swing,  ten ACC teams faced-off in Week Six.  Despite no upsets it was a high scoring week for the conference with four teams going over 40 points.

Here is an ACC Week 6 Review.

Conference Games

No 3. Clemson – 49
Syracuse – 14

Syracuse failed to make it three home wins in a row as Clemson raced ahead early in the first ACC meeting between the two sides.

Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd started fast by throwing two long touchdown passes in the opening period, both to junior wide receiver Adam Humphries.  The senior added two more in the second quarter to go along with a Zac Brooks one yard run, giving the Tigers a 35-7 lead at the half.

Syracuse opened the second half with a touchdown as Prince-Tyson Gulley rumbled in from 40 yards out.  However,  the game was put to bed when Boyd,  standing on his own goal line,  throw a perfect deep ball for Sammy Watkins,  who outraced the final defender for a 91-yard touchdown reception.  C.J. Davidson put the icing on the cake with just under four minutes to play,  as Clemson ran away with a comfortable victory.

No. 25 Maryland – 0

No. 8 Florida State – 63

Jameis Winston put in another remarkable performance as Florida State shut down Maryland.  The freshman threw for 393 yards and five touchdowns on route to the Seminoles’ biggest win of the season.

Florida State led 21-0 at the half with scores on the ground from Devonta Freeman and Karlos Willliams as well as Winston’s first touchdown pass of the day to Kelvin Benjamin.  The third quarter is where Winston exploded when he threw three touchdowns in just over ten minutes.  Nick O’Leary receptions of eight and 12 yards sandwiched Kenny Shaw’s third touchdown of the season.  The freshman quarterback wasn’t finished there,  the fourth quarter saw Winston find Benjamin for the second time from 21 yards out.

Maryland found themselves 14-0 down when quarterback C.J. Brown was knocked out of the game with a concussion.  Back-up quarterback Caleb Rowe nine of 17 passes for 119 yards while the Terrapins’ running game suffered all afternoon,  mustering a mere 33 yards from 25 attempts.

Georgia Tech – 30
No. 14 Miami – 45

Miami overcame a slow start against a gutsy Georgia Tech to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

Stephen Morris threw three touchdown passes and running back Duke Johnson had 325 all-purpose yards on a challenging afternoon for the Hurricanes.  Entering the second quarter Miami trailed 17-7 but went on a 38-6 run to seal victory, despite four turnovers.  Senior quarterback Morris finished with 324 yards,  three touchdowns and two interceptions while running back Dallas Crawford had two fourth quarter touchdowns.

David Sims had two rushing touchdowns for Georgia Tech,  who threw away a double-digit lead over Miami for the second consecutive season.

North Carolina – 17
Virginia Tech – 27

North Carolina failed to stop the slide as they lost their third straight.  Virginia Tech,  on the other hand,  won their fifth straight with the offense beginning to find momentum.

Hokies quarterback Logan Thomas threw three touchdown passes in a 293 yard performance.  The senior has finally found his feet in his final year of eligibility after struggling earlier in the season against Marshall and West Carolina.  Half-back Trey Edmunds struggled on the ground and could only achieve 1.9 yards per carry.

Tar Heels starting quarterback Bryn Renner missed the game with an injured foot,  meaning dual-threat sophmore Marquise Williams got the start.  Williams played well against the VT defense,  completing 23 of 25 passes for 277 yards,  two touchdowns and two interceptions with one of the picks coming late in the game.

NC State – 13
Wake Forest – 28

Wake Forest improved to .500 for the first time since September 6th while NC State has now lost both conference games thus far in 2013. Demon Deacons quarterback Tanner Price threw three touchdowns and ran for another while wide receiver Michael Campanaro had another big day.

NC State momentarily held the lead just before half-time until Price hit receiver Spencer Bishop for a 54-yard gain deep into Wolfpack territory.  Three plays later,  Campanaro hauled in a ten-yard touchdown pass to give the home side a 14-10 half-time lead.  A touchdown reception for Jared Crump came before Campanaro’s second early in the fourth quarter sealed the win.  Campanaro finished the day with 12 catches for 153 yards and two touchdowns.

NC State quarterback Pete Thomas had another torrid game,  throwing two interceptions taking his tally to seven on the season.  Receiver Bryan Underwood backed up his 148-yard performance against Central Michigan with 11 catches on the day.

Non-Conference Games

Ball State – 48
Virginia – 27

The Ball State Cardinals had 506 yards of offense as Keith Wenning threw for two touchdowns and Jahwan Edwards ran for three more in an impressive win over Virginia.

With the score at 31-24 at the end of the third quarter,  the Cardinals took the bull by the horns with Wenning airing out a 72-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Williams before Edwards sealed the victory with a 17-yard run.  Wenning finished with 346 passing yards and Edwards amassed 155 yards on the ground.

Virginia’s offense was far from bad but failed to keep up with the relentless Cardinals.  Running back Kevin Parks rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries to complement David Watford’s 204 passing yards.

Army – 27
Boston College – 48

A scintillating performance from running back Andre Williams led the Eagles to a comfortable win over Army.

The senior had 263 yards and five touchdowns on the ground in an inspiring performance.  Three of Williams’ scores came from more than 30 yards as he fell just a yard short of holding Boston College’s single-game rushing record.  Quarterback Chase Rettig also helped himself to a strong day by completing 11 of 13 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown.
