Florida State comfortably saw off Miami to remain undefeated. Elsewhere Georgia Tech improved to 6-3 while Clemson’s Sammy Watkins and Tajh Boyd continued to put up statistics. Here is a review of Week 10 in the ACC.
Conference Games
No. 7 Miami – 14
No. 3 Florida State – 41
The big game of the week that was never really a big game resulted in a run-away win for Florida State.
Despite Jameis Winston having arguably his poorest week of the season he still threw for 325 yards and completed 72% of his passes. It was running backs Devonta Freeman and James Wilder Jr. who took the spoils for the Seminoles. Freeman had 78 rushing yards and two scores as well as 98 receiving yards and another score while Wilder Jr. had 42 rushing yards and two scores.
For Miami it was it was a miserable day as Stephen Morris threw his ninth and tenth interceptions of the season and running back Duke Johnson was lost for the season with a broken ankle. Wide receiver Allen Huns had an impressive outing with two touchdown receptions.
No. 8 Clemson – 59
Virginia – 10
Clemson brushed Virginia aside to keep the pressure firmly on Florida State in the ACC.
Sammy Watkins opened the game with a touchdown before roping in a 96-yard bomb from Tajh Boyd for his seventh score of the season. The junior finished with eight catches for 169 yards and the two scores. Boyd himself had a big day completing 24 of 29 passes for 377 yards and three touchdowns.
Running back Kevin Parks had 82 yards on 16 carries for Virginia as they struggled to get anything going on offense. Quarterback David Watford completed less than 50% of his passes on another dour afternoon for the Cavaliers.
Pittsburgh – 10
Georgia Tech – 21
Georgia Tech grinded out a third straight win as they improved to 6-3 on the season.
Running back Robert Godhigh had two touchdowns and 89 yards from just six carries while David Sims pounded the rock with 94 yards and a score from 18 touches.
Pitt’s running duo of John Conner and Isaac Bennett were kept in check by an aggressive Yellow Jackets defense. The two could only muster 19 yards on 14 attempts between them. Quarterback Tom Savage had a respectable day completing 25 of 37 for 233 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Virginia Tech – 27
Boston College – 34
Boston College forced four turnovers to earn a win against a sliding Virginia Tech.
Running back Andre Williams had his fourth 150+ yard game from 33 carries while adding two touchdowns in the process. A pick six from Kevin Pierre-Louis setup the win as the Eagles went ahead in the third quarter.
Logan Thomas threw two touchdowns, two interceptions and 391 passing yards in another rocky afternoon for the senior. Wide receiver Joshua Stanford roped in six catches for 171 yards.
North Carolina – 27
NC State – 19
North Carolina recorded their third win of the season with an eight point victory over a falling NC State.
Bryn Renner had 124 yards and an interception as the senior quarterback continued to split reps with sophmore Marquise Williams. Williams had 92 yards passing and 51 rushing as the Tar Heel’s offense stuttered all day.
Freshman wide receiver Ryan Switzer threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to Quinshad Davis on a trick play with North Carolina trailing 14-16 in the second quarter. Bryn Renner ran one in himself while T.J. Logan also had a score on the ground.
Senior quarterback Brandon Mitchell had 130 passing yards and two interception for the Wolfpack as well as 105 yards and a score on the ground.
Wake Forest – 0
Syracuse – 13
Two third quarter touchdown were enough to get Syracuse back to .500 for the third time this season.
A six-yard run from quarterback Terrel Hunt and a 25-yard touchdown pass from wide receiver Jarrod West to Brisly Estime were enough to seal the win in the low scoring affair. The trick-play touchdown pass came when West took a hand-off before hitting Estime in the back corner of the end zone with six minutes left in the third quarter.
Orange running back Prince-Tyson Gulley was the pick of the offensive players on display with 85 yards on 13 attempts. Wake Forest’s star receiver Michael Campanaro left the game early with an injury. Sherman Ragland III did well in his absence with 10 catches for 91 yards.
