Big XII Week 13 Review

After this weekend, the conference landscape has changed completely. After an early season loss to West Virginia, Oklahoma State has now vaulted themselves to the top of the conference, controlling their own destiny from here on out. And Baylor, who fell to the Cowboys, lost any chance they had at potentially being national title contenders.

Here is a recap of this past weekend's Big XII games.

#4 Baylor- 17 vs. #10 Oklahoma State- 49

Baylor’s National Championship hopes have officially been derailed after suffering a loss to the Cowboys in a game where they were thoroughly dominated. The Bears offense struggled out of the gate, punting five times and fumbling the ball away once in their first six possessions. They would proceed to fumble the ball away two more times and turn the ball over three times on downs.

Viewing the stat sheet, Bryce Petty would appear to have had a solid game, throwing for 359 yards and two touchdowns, with zero interceptions. However, he was not nearly as efficient as he had been all season, tossing 20 incompletions.

The Bears were also unable to establish anything on the ground. Their leading rusher was Petty with 46 yards, and Shock Linwood only had 29 on 14 carries after rushing for over 100 in each of the last two games. Oklahoma State did an excellent job controlling the line of scrimmage.

On the other side of the ball, the Cowboys offense embarrassed the Bears’ defense, totaling 594 yards, and holding the ball for over 35 minutes of the game. Chelf did a great job controlling the offense and making plays, and finished the game completing 19 of his 25 pass attempts with 370 yards and three touchdowns.

Oklahoma State now takes control of the Big XII, holding the tiebreaker with wins over Texas and Baylor, as all three teams have one conference loss.

#20 Oklahoma- 41 vs. Kansas State- 31

This game went back and forth through the first three quarters, but the Sooners were able to pull away in the fourth to secure the victory.

Oklahoma was efficient because Trevor Knight was able to take what the defense gave him, completing 14 of 20 passes and rushing for another 82 yards. However, the star for the Sooners was running back Brennan Clay, who carried the ball 31 times for 200 yards and two touchdowns.

Kansas State strayed from their two-quarterback system as Jake Waters took almost all of the snaps, and threw for 348 yards and three touchdowns, but also threw two interceptions, one of which was returned for the eventual game-winning touchdown. The Sooners forced the Wildcats to pass the ball, as the Wildcats only rushed the ball 22 times, below what they usually run in a game.

Kansas- 0 vs. Iowa State- 34

Kansas was unable to build on their first conference win in three seasons, getting blown out by Iowa State on Saturday, giving the Cyclones their first conference win of the season.

Kansas’ inefficiency on offense once again stemmed from poor quarterback play, as Jake Heaps and Montell Cozart combined for 11 of 31 passing for 92 yards and an interception. Despite James Sims rushing for over 100 yards again and establishing the ground game, they were unable to keep the defense honest.

For Iowa State, they finally received solid play from the quarterback position, as Grant Rohach scorched the Jayhawks’ secondary for 300 yards and two touchdowns, only throwing five incompletions on 20 pass attempts.

Due to this win, the Cyclones save themselves from finishing last in the conference to the Jayhawks, barring some miraculous Kansas victory before the end of the season.
