Every year, National Signing Day is full of excitement. There is always a lot going on, between wall-to-wall coverage, and everyone making a spectacle of where they will be “taking their talents” for the next four years. However, every year, there are a few surprises.
This year did not have many big shockers, as those usually happen in the weeks beforehand. This year, the biggest moments leading up to National Signing Day were Jalen Tabor committing to Arizona at the Under Armour All-American Game, only to change his mind and commit to Florida three days later, and the commitments of Ermon Lane and Dalvin Cook from Florida.
Even though the most notable flips and surprise commitments happened before Wednesday, there were a few that did offer some newsworthy headlines. Here are the most notable surprises from National Signing Day.
USC Trojans
The Trojans did incredibly well, as many would expect. However, with a new coaching staff coming in after the fiascos with Lane Kiffin and Ed Orgeron, as well as coming off their scholarship reductions, nobody saw the coup USC hauled in coming. With Adoree’ Jackson, John Smith, and Damien Mama, it was easy to see one, maybe two, choosing the Trojans, but it was shocking to see all three commit. USC nailed it on National Signing Day, and definitely shocked the country that they can still keep up, despite difficult circumstances.
Dexter Wideman
Wideman, a defensive tackle from Saluda, SC, swapped hats on National Signing Day. He had been committed to Florida State since the summer, however, decided on Wednesday to flip to South Carolina. While Wideman is an in-state player, it is shocking to see a player who had been committed to Florida State flip shortly after the Seminoles had just won the National Championship. This was a huge catch for South Carolina, and may have been the biggest individual flip on Signing Day.
Malik McDowell
McDowell did not shock anyone when he committed to Michigan State, as they were the favorite to sign him. However, in a situation that happens far too often, McDowell’s parents were not happy with their son’s decision, so they have not signed his Letter of Intent. Therefore, McDowell is not officially part of the Spartans’ recruiting class… yet. While this is not the same as last year when Arkansas running back Alex Collins’ mother refused to sign the letter and drove off with it, it certainly is one of the more dramatic happenings on this year’s Signing Day.
