Players to Watch

Devin Funchess, wide receiver (MICH): Funchess has received more hype than anybody after his seven-catch,  95-yard and three touchdown performance to open the season.  The junior had a sturdy 2013 season but looks ready to explode now his name is on the NFL radar.

Derrick Green & De’Veon Smith, running backs (MICH): These two sophomore barely touched the field as freshman but both exploded onto the scene in Week 1 with 285 rushing yards and three touchdowns between them.  Appalachian State are not Notre Dame but two exciting tailbacks to choose from is a good problem.

Everett Golson, quarterback (ND): Golson is an exciting if not unpredictable player who once led the ‘Irish to a national championship game.  His first game back after a year-long suspension yielded 295 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Jaylon Smith, linebacker (ND): Smith is the leader of the defense despite just beginning his sophomore year.  He plays sideline to sideline from the heart of the unit and drives his team-mates throughout the game.

Wolverines’ Offense Vs Fighting Irish’s Defense

Fifth-year senior Devin Gardner has started the season hot and had just one incompletion last week.  He is still raw despite his years but has found a new favored target in Funchess.  Moreover,  the new running back tandem will help him as the season wears on.

Forcing Gardner to pass is what the home side will do as they pack the box.  The Wolverines’ quarterback has questionable decision making and forcing him into difficult situations will cause turnovers and the chance for big,  game-swinging plays.

Wolverines’ Defense Vs. Fighting Irish’s Offense

Michigan are very young on defense and did not put up great numbers against Appalachian State.  However,  they will get better as the season goes on and gain confidence.

Golson is the key to Notre Dame’s offense,  especially now DaVaris Daniels has been suspended.  A young,  inexperienced member of the squad will need to step up and ensure the offense can move the chains through the air and not become one dimensional.

Game Preview

This should be a great match for the neutral.  The Fighting Irish need to keep their ranking and show they can win at home,  while the Wolverines are determined to prove they are worthy of being named with the best.

Implications

This encounter always brings thrills and drama.  A bitter rivalry is about to come to an end and the implications are personal.  Bragging rights for years to be come will be claimed on Saturday.

Prediction

This will be a firecracker but I think Michigan may upset the odds and take a famous win. ND 28-31 MICH
