Nick Saban signs Extension with Alabama

After all the hoopla that has happened in the past couple weeks, the Texas Longhorns still don’t know who is going to be their head coach next season. Kirk Herbstreit of ESPN broke the news via twitter that Nick Saban has signed a contract extension to stay at the University of Alabama. For now, the details of the contract are still unknown.

There had been plenty of rumors swirling around Saban and the possibility of him making the move to Austin, Texas. There were reports that Saban had left an extension sitting on his desk for almost a week, refusing to sign it. Everything picked up when it broke that the Saban family supposedly recently purchased a house in the Austin area. And it was made worse when Saban refused to comment on the situation. However, all of that seems to only have been used as leverage to get Alabama to make a bigger offer. We’ll likely never know how much interest Saban truly had in the job.

With Saban now signing on for the long-term in Tuscaloosa, it is safe to assume the Crimson Tide will continue to be National Title contenders on a yearly basis. Meanwhile, the Longhorns have to decide whether Mack Brown will be the head coach next year, and if he’s not, they will need to start searching.

Right now, the rumors are that Jim Harbaugh of the San Francisco 49ers is next on the list of targets, but getting him is, in all likelihood, more improbable than getting Saban, who until he came to Alabama, had not spent more than five years at any job.
