The first weekend of college football is in the books, and it was a great one. There were some blowouts and some nail-biters that went all the way to the wire. The big names dominated and some fresh faces made an impact.
The Big XII had an up and down first weekend. They had some great performances, as Texas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma won handily. Oklahoma State beat SEC opponent, Mississippi State and TCU hung with national power, LSU, all the way to the wire. Then there were some poor performances. Kansas State and Iowa State lost to FCS opponents, North Dakota State and Northern Iowa respectively, and West Virginia needed a score late in the fourth quarter to beat William & Mary.
Here are some of the top performers from the Big XII this past week.
David Ash (QB, Texas)
Ash played well in his first game since leading Texas to a come from behind win in the Valero Alamo Bowl last season. He finished the game with 434 total yards (343 passing, 91 rushing) and scored five total touchdowns. Texas succesfully handled New Mexico State, winning 56-7.
Baker Mayfield (QB, Texas Tech)
The walk-on played incredibly well in his first career game. Mayfield completed 43 of his 60 passes and finished the game with 413 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. While he does play in a pass happy offense at Texas Tech, it is extremely impressive for a walk-on true freshman to walk out and play as well as Mayfield did, leading Texas Tech to their first win of the season.
Lache Seastrunk (RB, Baylor)
The man who claimed he will win the Heisman Trophy this season had a solid start to 2013. While it was only against Wofford, Seastrunk was able to rack up 111 yards on only 11 carries, as well as score two touchdowns.
Charles Sims (RB, West Virginia)
After transferring from Houston, Sims impressed in his first game for the Mountaineers. In what should have been an easy game against William & Mary, Sims ran for 120 yards and a touchdown, in a 24-17 win, where at one point, the Mountaineers were down 10 points.
Eric Ward (WR, Texas Tech)
Ward is being looked at as a potential draft pick in May, and he showed his talent this past week. He caught 13 passes for 150 yards in Texas Tech’s 41-23 win over SMU.
