When Jameis Winston set college football alight in 2013 it immediately sparked conversation about how high he would go in the 2015 NFL Draft, however, recent comments from Winston have thrown a spanner in the works.
The Heisman Trophy winner announced he plans to stay in Tallahassee for two more football seasons rather than enter the 2015 draft.
So, what are the chances Winston stays beyond his redshirt sophomore season? It’s easy to make said comments before the big lights of the NFL are before you; it is another when an eight-figure contract is on the table.
The narrative thus far has been Winston staying in college so he can play baseball, however, I believe football reasons may come to the forefront. The 2015 NFL Draft will likely see a quarterback crop that includes Marcus Mariota, Brett Hundley and Bryce Petty - three potentially great quarterbacks that could make 2015 one of the most top-heavy quarterback classes in recent memory. 2016, despite being a very long way off, looks a lot lighter at the minute with Christian Hackenberg from Penn State the only “big” name as of today. Not to mention Winston will be a year wiser which will only help him when one lucky with the first-overall pick deliberates on who to take.
The success of Florida State will also play a major role in the decision process. If the Seminoles win back-to-back national championships – which would not be a major shock – then the whole footballing world will be raving about Winston – as if they are not already.
At this stage it is almost impossible to tell what Winston will do after another season in the limelight but I certainly would not be shocked to see him attain three playing seasons in college football. All I can say is fingers crossed he stays healthy and continues to make Saturday afternoons what they are.
