Adam Scott posted a bogey free five-under par 66 about ninety minutes before the leaders strolled up No. 18. His 11-under par gave everyone else on the golf course a target and the rest of the field could not catch him.
Eight players were within two shots of the lead throughout the afternoon, but errant tee balls found water hazards, double bogeys and dreaded others littered scorecards.
When Scott finished Kevin Chappel was at 12-under par and it appeared the winner would come from one of the later groups still on the course. Bubba Watson, Tiger Woods, Justin Rose, Matt Kuchar and Gary Woodland all had chances to win, but fell short.
Chappel at one point was at 13-under par and had a two shot lead with just eight holes left to play. He was striping his irons and playing from the fairway. Then things got unruly and golf became a mystery again.
He finished his last eight holes at seven-over par and fell to T-15 at six-under par for the tournament.
Tiger Woods was lurking and making a move, when a back spasm struck during his second shot to the green on the par-5 No. 13. It was so severe that it buckled his knees and drove him to the ground. His ball flew into a water hazard some 40 yards left of the green and resulted in a bogey on the easiest hole on Liberty National.
He was able to finish and even made birdies at Nos. 16 and 17 to get to 10-under par good enough for runner-up.
One of the most disappointed players had to be Matt Kuchar. He is one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour and entered the Barclays ranked No. 2 in the FedEx Cup standings. A win would have moved him ahead of Woods and into the top spot.
He made a very untidy triple-bogey 7 at the par-4 ninth hole and his day completely unraveled after that. He shot three-over par 38 on the back nine and fell to T-19.
Gary Woodland struck the ball beautifully all week at Liberty National and avoided the trouble that lurked on every hole. A double-bogey on the fifth hole plus finding a water hazard and subsequent bogey on the par-5 No. 13 pushed his final round score to two-over par 73. He ended at ten-under par just one shot behind Scott.
Justin Rose turned in one of the better rounds of the day, but he too could not catch Scott and had to settle for a share of runner-up.
Canadian Graham Delaet has been playing solid golf all season and his Sunday 65 got him to ten-under par and a share of second place. He seemed like the only guy on the golf course that truly wanted to win.
Liberty National created enough thrills and spills to make even a hardened NASCAR fan happy.
Scott picks up his second win of the year and with his other trophy a Green Jacket puts his name squarely in the Player of the Year debate.
The final leaderboard had the Masters winner, the U.S. Open and Open Champions, as well as, Tiger Woods all in contention.
This FedEx Cup Playoff idea may just catch on one of these days.
