Asia Surprises Europe To Earn Tie in First Eurasia Cup

The European and Asian golf tours held the inaugural Eurasia Cup in Malaysia this week. A star-studded European Team was expected to completely dominate the lesser-known Asian Team, but as often happens in sports the underdog surprised the favorites.

The Eurasia Cup is a new team event structured along the lines of a Ryder Cup. Play began on Thursday with five four-ball matches. Friday’s competition featured five foursome matches and ended with ten singles matches on Saturday.

The European Team led by Miguel Angel Jimenez and featuring, Graeme McDowell, Thomas Bjorn, Victor Dubuisson, Thorbjorn Olesen, Jamie Donaldson, Pablo Larrazabal, Joost Luiten, Gonzalo Ferdnandez-Castano, and Stephen Gallacher, were completely surprised with the performance of the Asian Team.

The European Team fulfilled every prediction and lived up to its billing as the much stronger team, by winning all five four-ball matches on Thursday and jumping out to a commanding 5-0 lead.

Evidently Ben Crenshaw is not the only captain that can rally a team. Asian Team playing Captain, Thongchai Jaidee must have said something to his teammates to up their games after Thursday's rout.

In the foursome matches on Friday the Asian team won two matches outright and garnered two halves for a total of three points and entered the Sunday singles trailing 7-3.

Winning those three points on Friday proved to be a huge momentum boost for the Aisan Team. On Sunday, Jaidee took down McDowell, Kiradetch Aphibarnrat defeated Thomas Bjorn and Kim Hyung-sun bested Pablo Larrazabal. Victor Dubuisson, who performed so well at the WGC-Accenture Match Play, was beaten by Anirban Lahiri. Gaganjeet Bhullar bested Thorbjorn Olesen and Rahmann Siddikar defeated Stephen Gallacher.

The Asians won one more point when Hideto Tanihara and Prayad Marksaeng earned halves in their two singles matches.

Only Joost Luiten and Captain Jimenez were able to win full points for the Europeans.

Overcoming a 5-0 deficit after the first day, the Asians won 10 of the last 15 points to earn a 10-10 tie in the Eurasia Cup.

It was a monumental comeback.

The Eurasia Cup proves once again why sports are so intriguing to watch and follow. Once the competitors enter the arena, the heart and the soul of the combatants give even the least likely challenger a chance to prove their ability and create a thrilling contest.
