Bill Haas picked up his fifth career win on the PGA Tour in a three-stroke victory over Roberto Castro at the AT&T National.
This was the first title for Haas since his playoff win over Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson at the 2012 Northern Trust Open at Riviera.
Haas has not been short of cash, however, as he won the 2011 Tour Championship and the $10 million FedEx Cup.
He turned in a nearly perfect five-under par 66 in the final round on Sunday. His round included six birdies and a lone bogey at the fifth hole.
He shot a three-under par 68 on Saturday to join Castro as the 54-hole leaders. Haas’ third round on Saturday included a triple-bogey seven on the par-4 No. 11.
Haas led the field in birdies for the week and ranked second in the all-important putts-per-green and putts-per-greens-in-regulation statistics.
Those putting statistics combined with his accurate iron play, he ranked fourth in greens-in-regulation, helped give him the win.
He collects $1.1 million and moves to No. 7 in the FedEx Cup standings. Haas is having a very solid year with seven top-10 finishes in his 16 starts and his total earnings for the year are $2.7 million.
With his runner-up finish, Roberto Castro jumps to No. 41 in the FedEx Cup race and has earned $1.1 million in 2013.
He has had a bit of an up and down year missing eight of 20 cuts this year. His 63 in the first round of the Players Championship in May tied the course record held by Fred Couples (1992) and Greg Norman (1994). He followed up the record setting round with a 78 and shot 71-71 on the weekend to finish T-19.
D.H. Lee turned in the low round of the day at Congressional with a seven-under par 64 on Sunday. His final round included a stretch of six birdies over seven holes and posted a six-under par 30 on the front nine. Bogies at Nos. 10 and 11 offset three birdies on the back nine.
His third-place finish earned his biggest check of the year $377,000, moves him to No. 99 in the FedEx Cup standings and should ensure his PGA Tour card for next season.
The PGA Tour moves to West Virginia for the Greenbrier Classic this week before heading to Illinois for the John Deere Classic.
In just three weeks everyone will fly across the Atlantic for the Open Championship to be held at Muirfield in Scotland.
