Champions Tour Visits California for Toshiba Classic

This will be the 20th year the Toshiba Classic has been held on the Champions Tour and it is the 19th time it has been held at the Newport Beach Country Club.

The tournament will be contested over three days and 54 holes. The golf course will play to 6,584 yards and a par-71.

David Frost ran away from Fred Couples and the rest of the field last year to pick up the five-shot win.

Peter Senior and Jay Haas tied for third, Tom Watson finished fifth and Rocco Mediate was sixth last year.

81 players are in the field this week vying for a piece of the $1.75 million total purse and the $262,000 first-place check.

2013 Charles Schwab Cup Champion, Kenny Perry is in the field along with, Bernhard Langer and Rocco Mediate, as well as, European Tour stars Sandy Lyle and Colin Montgomerie.

Billy Andrade, who just turned 50-years-old January 25, will be making his maiden start on the Champions Tour.

Eight members of the World Golf Hall of Fame are scheduled to be in the field at the Toshiba Classic, Hale Irwin, Montgomerie, Watson, Langer, Couples, Lyle, Curtis Strange and Tom Kite.

Jay Haas has started strong this season with a T-4 in Hawaii, and T-5’s in the two Florida tournaments.

Jeff Sluman has not missed an event since 2010 and is making his 82nd straight Champions Tour appearance this week at the Toshiba Classic.

This is just the fourth tournament of the Champions Tour season. Langer, Michael Allen and Kirk Triplett have won the first three events of the year.

The Champions Tour is anxiously awaiting the first start for Miguel Angel Jimenez, who will play his inaugural event at the Greater Gwinnett Championship to be held April 14-20 at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, GA.
