Christina Kim took a five-shot lead into the final round of the Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Mexico City on Sunday, but needed two extra holes to win her first LPGA Tour event since 2005.
Feng is coming off a win in Malaysia and has four top-10 finishes in her last five starts. She is ranked No. 5 in the world and No 6 in the Race to the CME Globe.
Kim played in all six tournaments on the “Asian Swing” with her best finish a T-23 coming in China at the Blue Bay LPGA Classic. She was well down the points list and was battling to stay inside the Top 70 and earn her playing privileges for next season on the LPGA Tour.
Kim and Feng were grouped together for the final round on Sunday. Feng got Kim’s attention early with an eagle at the par-5 No. 2 and turned the front nine in two-under 34. Kim could only manage an even-par 36 and the lead was down to three shots.
Feng continued to apply pressure with four more birdies on the back nine to post six-under-par 66. Kim began to show the strain with bogeys at Nos. 14 and 15. She bounced back with a pair of birdies on the next two holes, but a bogey at the last left her at one-under-par 71 for the day and tied at 15-under-par with Feng.
Both players returned to the 18th tee for the playoff and both made par the first time around. No. 18 was played one more time with Kim making a par and Feng falling to bogey.
The win for Kim marked her successful return from mental depression that at one point found her considering suicide.
The flamboyant, outgoing Kim has battled the demons and has come out the other side stronger and ready to compete on the LPGA Tour.
Inbee Park, Stacy Lewis, Lydia Ko, Lexi Thompson and all of the big names in women’s golf were in the field this week in Mexico City, but the biggest and best story, in all of golf, was the return of Christina Kim to the winner’s circle.
