Fabrizio Zanotti Makes History at BMW International on European Tour

Fabrizio Zanotti survived a four-man, five-hole playoff at the BMW International Championship to get his maiden victory and become the first person from Paraguay to win on the European Tour.

Zanotti is 31 years old and turned professional in 2003. He has played in South America, the Challenge Tour and on the European Tour since 2008. This win came in his 181st start on the European Tour.

He fired a pair of seven-under-par 65’s on the weekend and moved up 18 spots on Sunday to post the early clubhouse lead at 19-under-par.

Zanotti had to go overtime to collect the €333,330 first-place check, however.

Henrik Stenson made a furious run on Sunday carding four birdies and an eagle for a six-under-par 30 over his final nine holes to catch Zanotti in the clubhouse at 19-under-par.

Gregory Havret and Rafael Bello-Cabrera also finished at 19-under-par and joined the playoff.

All four players made par at the first playoff hole, No. 18. They returned to the 18th tee for the second playoff hole and while Zanotti, Stenson and Bello-Cabrera made birdie, Havret posted a par and was forced to exit.

The three remaining players all birdied No. 17 for the third playoff hole and returned to No. 18 for the fourth hole in the playoff. Stenson and Zanotti both made par and Bello-Cabrera could not.

Stenson found the water at No. 17, the fifth playoff hole and failed to make par. Zanotti was able to play safe for the win.

Although Stenson lost, he gave German golf fans a glimpse of the great shot-making and stellar play reminiscent of last year, when he won the FedEx Cup and the Race to Dubai.

This win will move Zanotti from No. 305 in the Official World Golf Rankings to just outside the top 100.

He also moves up to No. 24 in the 2014 Race to Dubai with €543,835.
