Fred Couples Wins Shaw Charity Classic on Champions Tour

Fred Couples sent a jolt of excitement through the fans in Canada with a chip-in eagle at his last hole and got his second win of the year on the Champions Tour at the Shaw Charity Classic in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Couples set a course record nine-under-par 61 in the final round on Sunday to catch the leaders and force a playoff with Billy Andrade. In his record-setting round, Couples made two eagles on the back nine after firing a three-under-par 32 on the first nine.

He posted eagle, birdie, birdie at Nos. 11-13 and electrified the Canadian golf fans with a chip-in eagle at his last hole for a six-under-par 29.

Couples and Billy Andrade finished tied for the lead after 54 holes. Couples was able to make a birdie on the first playoff hole and Andrade could only manage par to give Couples his 11th career Champions Tour win.

Couples was forced to take some time off earlier in the season with back issues, this win moves him to No. 6 in the Charles Schwab Cup race. He has only entered nine events on the Champions Tour this season, but now has two wins, two runners-up and six top-10 finishes with no missed cuts.

Bernhard Langer continues to lead the season-long Charles Schwab Cup standings by 600 points over two-time senior major championship winner Colin Montgomerie.

Joe Daley held the lead after the first two rounds and fired a third-round three-under-par 67, but you have to go low on the Champions Tour to play with the big boys. He fell two spots to finish in third place.

The Champions Tour has just six events remaining before the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship. The old guys will stay north of the border for the Quebec Championship this week, where Esteban Toledo will defend his title.
