Greg Owen Comes From Way Back to Win United Leasing on Web.com Tour

Greg Owen began the final round of the United Leasing Championship in 14th position and not really thinking of winning the golf tournament.

To compound his situation, he began his round on Sunday with a triple-bogey-seven at the first hole. Now well down the leaderboard all that was left to do was play out the round, collect a check and catch the next plane out of town.

He made birdies at Nos. 6 and 7 to post a one-over-par 37 on his first nine and then the fun began.

He strung off five birdies and an eagle on Nos. 10-17 to get to 10-under-par for the tournament and in the lead.

Evidently the pressure was too great for him as he bogeyed the 72nd hole to finish at nine-under-par, but that was good enough for the win.

He began with a triple-bogey on No. 1 and finished with bogey on No. 18, but seven birdies and one eagle were enough to get the job done.

Owen is a 42-year-old journeyman professional from England. He turned professional in 1992 and has one win on the European Tour, but that was back in 2003.

He has played in eight events on the PGA Tour this season and made six cuts. His best finish, a T-24 came at the Puerto Rico Open in March.

This was the fourth start on the Web.com Tour this year. He finished T-4 in the Georgia Classic in May and missed the cut in his other two starts.

He has played in 201 PGA Tour events. His best finish was a runner-up at the 2006 Bay Hill Invitational, but he has earned nearly $6 million in his career.

The win at the United Leasing Championship should put him in the Top 25 at the end of the Web.com Tour season and earn full PGA Tour playing privileges for 2014-2015.
