Heavy Winds Buffeted Trump Doral For Second Round of WGC-Cadillac Championship

There was a lot of head-shaking and grumbling after 30-mile-per-hour winds made the new Blue Monster nearly unplayable in the second round on Friday.

Sixty-eight of the best players in the world are in the field this week at the redesigned Trump Doral. Not one player broke 70 and 113 balls found a watery grave.

The new greens are playing extremely firm and several balls that hit greens rolled off into water hazards. Winds gusted to as much as 40 miles per hour and the plentiful water hazards were in play on every hole.

At just 150 yards, the par-3 No. 15 was especially difficult. Designer Gil Hanse moved the green closer to the edge of the water and made it a peninsula green with three distinct pin locations.

The Friday pin was on the left side and a quartering wind over the player’s right shoulder would not hold a draw that landed in the middle of the green.

While Hanse was brooding and worrying about creating too much of a challenge, Donald Trump was smiling and telling anyone who would listen, what a wonderfully difficult golf course Trump Doral had become.

One thing that should make the players feel slightly better is that the WGC-Cadillac Championship is a no-cut event. Last place earns $44,500, which should soothe some wounded egos from Friday’s disaster.

A word of caution, however, the pro shop at Trump Doral may want to increase the number of golf balls they keep in inventory.

When mere mortals attempt to play the Blue Monster, there will be a lot of lost golf balls.
