Jordan Spieth Wins ‘Down Under’ in the Australian Open

Jordan Spieth had a very consistent year on the PGA Tour in 2014, but did not win. He finally collected his first trophy of the year at the Australian Open in Sydney.

Spieth’s final round, bogey-free eight-under-par 63 included four birdies on the front nine and four more on the inward nine to win by six shots over runner-up Rod Pampling.

Speaking with the press after his round he said, “It was my best round ever.”

Spieth had several chances to get his second win on the PGA Tour last season and most recently finished runner-up to Hideki Matsuyama in the Dunlop Phoenix Open in Japan. In 27 starts on the PGA Tour, he posted eight top-10 finishes, including two runners-up, with one of those coming at the Masters. He earned over $4.3 million and was No. 15 in the FedEx Cup race.

Even with the monetary success, the lack of trophies on his resume’ was weighing on the youngster.

Spieth continued,

"There have been a lot of close calls since the last time I won until now. It would be a lie if I didn't say that it was eating at me a little bit. It's tough when you get so close so many times at big events against world class fields and you're not able to pull it off. I didn't know it was a 63 until I signed the card. It was one of those rounds you are in the zone and you don't really care where you're at."

Spieth beat a quality field in the Aussie Open. Defending champion and world No. 1, Rory McIlroy posted two strong rounds of 69-69, the first two days, but 76-72 on the weekend left him at T-15, two-over-par for the tournament.

Adam Scott, who finished runner-up to McIlroy last year at this event, finished at four-under-par and nine shots behind the winner.

This was a quality win on a very good golf course for the 21-year-old and 14th ranked player in the world. This should give Spieth a big boost for 2015 and move nearer the Top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
