Weather issues forced the European Tour to curtail the final round of the Maybank Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur.
Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat, ranked No. 170 on the Official World Golf Rankings, picked up his first European Tour win this week. The 23-year-old has one other professional title, the 2011 SAIL Open, in New Delhi, India, on the Asian Tour.
He plays primarily on the Japan and Asian Tours. In 26 starts on the European Tour since 2009, Aphibarnrat has five top-10 finishes and made 15 cuts. His first place check of €350,411 was the largest of his career and accounts for nearly half of his €809,000 total European Tour earnings.
Aphibarnrat finished at 13-under par and bested some of the European Tour’s biggest names for the win.
Edoardo Molinari who has struggled since returning from injury shot 66-71-67. He finished one shot behind the winner, at 12-under par, for runner-up. Molinari’s last win came at the 2010 Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.
Charl Schwartzel, ranked No. 17 in the world, made the long trip to Malaysia and finished T-4 at 10-under par. The 2011 Masters champion has played well since last fall and has to be one of the favorites heading to Augusta.
Padraig Harrington had one of his best outings for some time, posting 69-68-70 for nine-under par total and finished T-6.
World No. 3, Luke Donald shot a rather mundane two-over par 74 in the first round. He followed that with a second-round 73 and missed the cut by three shots in Malaysia. It was his first career missed cut on the European Tour.
South African Richard Sterne currently leads the European Tour’s Race to Dubai with Charl Schwartzel, Sergio Garcia, Scott Jamieson, Graeme McDowell and Louis Oosthuizen close behind.
The European Tour next moves to Morocco for the Trophee Hassan II. Michael Hoey from Northern Ireland will defend.
