Mark Wiebe shot an eight-under par 64 to take the first round lead at the Pacific Links Hawaii Championship.
His round included nine birdies and a lone bogey on the last hole. Wiebe made birdies on Nos. 3-5 and added two more birdies at Nos. 8 and 9 to post a five-under par 31 on his front nine.
After a par at No. 10, he strung together four consecutive birdies before the bogey at No. 18 left him at three-under par for the back nine.
Wiebe has made 19 cuts in 20 starts this season, has earned $488,000 and is No. 19 in the Charles Schwab Cup race.
Wiebe’s lone top-10 this year came when he won the 2013 Senior Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.
Mark Calcavecchia and John Cook are tied for the second spot at six-under par. Brian Henninger is one more shot back at five-under par. Three players, Brad Bryant, Brad Faxon and Corey Pavin are tied at four-under par.
Charles Schwab Cup leader Kenny Perry is at even par and eight shots behind the leader.
Vijay Singh is making his Champions Tour debut in Hawaii this week and is in a large cluster of players at three-under par.
This is just the second year for the Pacific Links Hawaii Championship. Willie Wood is the defending champion.
Evidently Champions Tour players like to visit Hawaii.
All of the Charles Schwab Cup leaders are in the field and all but one of winners from the 2013 Champions Tour season is making an appearance at the Kapolei Golf Club.
