Michael Allen Wins on Champions Tour in Mississippi

Michael Allen never won on the PGA Tour, but collected his fourth title on the Champions Tour at the Mississippi Golf Resort Classic in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Allen had a phenomenal year on the Champions Tour last year. He won twice, had two runners-up and two third-place finishes. He had a total of 13 top-10 finishes and did not miss a cut in 22 events last year.

He won $1.6 million in 2012 and finished No. 6 on the Charles Schwab Cup Standings.

Allen shot one of the lowest rounds of the day on Sunday. A final round five-under par 67 gave him the win by one shot over Bernhard Langer.

Langer, with one win and three top-10 finishes this year, leads the Champions Tour money list but is second to David Frost in the 2013 Charles Schwab Cup race. He had four birdies in his final round but two bogeys proved to be his undoing.

This was Allen’s best finish of the year. He had played in four events prior to the Mississippi Golf Resort Classic and only had one top-10 finish. He was T-8 last week at the Toshiba Classic in California.

David Frost holds the lead on the season-long Charles Schwab Cup race. He has two wins this year and was T-6 in Mississippi.

Russ Cochran, Gene Sauers and Tom Pernice Jr. finished tied for third place at eight-under par.

Rocco Mediate, Mark O’Meara and Peter Senior tied with Frost for sixth at six-under par.

Fred Couples was in the mix heading into the final round but a final round two-over par 74 moved him down to T-12.

John Cook, who is No. 3 on the Champions Tour money list, posted 73-72 over the first two rounds. He finished with a final round 67 to get to four-under par for the tournament and move up 33 spots for a T-12 finish.

The Champions Tour will take a few weeks off. The next event on their schedule is the Greater Gwinnett Championship from TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Georgia, April 19-21.
