Mickelson Misses the Cut, Matt Every Surges to the Lead at the Greenbrier Classic

Matt Every shot a brilliant 62 on Friday at the Greenbrier Classic in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia and took the sole lead at nine-under par.

Every’s round over the Old White Course included four birdies on the front nine and another four birdies on the back side with no bogies to litter his card. He had shot a one-under par 69 in the first round on Thursday.

He participated on the Golf Channel’s Big Break Mesquite after turning professional in 2006. His only professional win came at the 2009 Nationwide Tour Championship on the Nationwide Tour (Web.com).

He finished runner-up at the Valero Texas Open and the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic and added a third place finish at the Mayakoba Classic last year. He finished 2012 with $1.9 million in earnings and at No. 53 in the FedEx Cup.

He has not been as successful in 2013 with only two top-10 finishes and ten missed cuts in 20 starts.

Daniel Summerhays, Bill Lunde, Steven Bowditch, Russell Henley and first round co-leader, Johnson Wagner are all at eight-under par and tied for second.

The other first round leader, Tommy Gainey shot a second round one-over par 71 and fell to T-7.

Former Greenbrier Classic winner Stuart Appleby shot 70-71 and missed the cut.

Phil Mickelson continued his string of poor performances on the Old White Course and missed his third consecutive cut at the Greenbrier Classic. Even though he shot a two-under par 68 on Friday, his four-over par 74 in the first round left him at two-over par and three shots outside the cut line.

The winner last week at the Travelers Championship, Ken Duke shot 69-74 and missed the cut this week.

The cut came at one-under par. With 70 players within eight shots of the lead, the weekend should prove to be exciting at the Greenbrier Classic.
