The ‘Most Interesting Man in Golf’ dropped in on the Champions Tour last week, picked up a nice check and another trophy for his mantle.
Jimenez, coming off a fourth-place finish at the Masters, won his first tournament on the senior circuit at the Greater Gwinnett Championship outside of Atlanta.
He turned 50 years old in January and has won 20 European Tour events around the world, but this was his first win in the United States.
Jimenez is best known for his gregarious personality, the pony tail sticking out of his cap and his love of fast cars, good cigars and red wine.
His warm up routine is legendary and has been a huge hit on youtube.
He can now say, been there done that, got the trophy and the big check. Much to the delight of the other Champions Tour players, he is going to take the money and run back to the European Tour, for now.
His primary goal this year is to qualify for the European Ryder Cup team and is just outside the points necessary to earn an automatic berth. He has already been named an assistant by team captain Paul McGinley, but he wants to make the team as a player.
Jimenez beat a strong field at TPC Sugarloaf. Charles Schwab Cup points leader Bernhard Langer finished runner-up, two-time Charles Schwab Cup winner, Jay Haas finished third and Fred Couples was fourth.
With three rounds of 65-70-67, Jimenez dominated the field and won by two shots at 14-under par.
Steve Pate, David Frost and Duffy Waldorf tied for fifth. Willie Wood, Colin Montgomerie, Kenny Perry and Chien Soo Lu all posted six-under par and finished tied for eighth.
Perry was the 2013 Charles Schwab Cup champion, but has struggled thus far in 2014. This was only his second top-10 finish and he is No. 19 on the Charles Schwab Cup points list.
The Champions Tour will take a week off before heading to Houston for the Insperity Invitational, May 2-4, where Esteban Toledo is the defending champion.
