Patrick Reed posted a six-under par 64 to take a one-shot lead after 36 holes at the Wyndham Championship.
Reed is just 23 years old and is in his second full year of professional golf. He helped Augusta State win two NCAA Division 1 Golf Championships in 2010 and 2011.
He played on the PGA Tour in 2012 receiving 12 sponsor’s exemptions and Monday qualified for another six tournaments. He made $300,000 last year and earned his 2013 PGA Tour card by finishing in the 22nd spot in the PGA Tour Q-School.
Reed travels the tour with his wife as his caddy and is seeking his first PGA Tour win.
He holds a slim lead over John Huh, who shot the best round of the day at Sedgefield Country Club, an eight-under par 62. Huh won the 2012 Mayakoba Classic, made 22 cuts and earned $2.7 million last year.
Huh has not had as much success this year. He only has one top-10 finish, has missed 11 cuts and is No. 91 in the FedEx Cup standings. A high finish this week would help salvage a poor sophomore season.
Jordan Spieth posted 65-66 over the first two rounds and is two shots behind Reed at nine-under par. Spieth was the first teenager to win on the PGA Tour in over 80 years when he won the John Deere Classic last month.
The Wyndham Championship is the last tournament before the FedEx Cup Playoffs begin at the Barclays next week.
Brandt Snedeker, Nick Watney and Stewart Cink all missed the cut at the Wyndham and will have more time to practice for the Barclays.
Some very familiar names missed the cut and will have a longer off season this year. Ben Curtis, Peter Hanson, Carl Pettersson, Sean O’Hair, Jonathan Byrd, Y.E. Yang, Woody Austin, Vijay Singh, Robert Allenby and Padraig Harrington will miss the lucrative FedEx Cup Playoffs.
The FedEx Cup Playoffs encompass four tournaments that offer $8 million purses. Players that qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs also earn a cut of the $35 million bonus pool that is split among the top players.
A total of $67 million is up for grabs over the next month on the PGA Tour.
Some players that missed finishing inside the Top-125 and qualifying for the FedEx Cup Playoffs will now be forced to compete in the final four Web.com Tour events to compete for the 25 PGA Tour cards that will be awarded for next season.
