With Tiger Woods’ eighth win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in the books the PGA Tour now moves to Texas for the next two events prior to the Masters.
The Florida Swing provided two wins for Woods. He also won the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Trump Doral.
The win at Bay Hill was Wood’s third win of the year and his sixth win in the last 12 months. He overtook Rory McIlroy for the No. 1 spot on the Official World Golf Rankings. He seems to be very close to regaining the form that has earned him 14 major titles.
Woods has been the No. 1 ranked player for a total of 623 weeks in his 15-year career. Lee Westwood (22 weeks), Martin Kaymer (8 weeks), Luke Donald (56 weeks) and Rory McIlroy (32 weeks) have all held the top spot over the past three years.
Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson will headline the field at the Shell Houston Open held at Redstone Golf Club.
The grounds crew at Redstone Golf Club will create firm, fast greens with severe undulations to simulate the conditions at Augusta National.
Mickelson won the 2011 Shell Houston Open. He won this year at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and will looking to get his game in shape heading to the Masters.
McIlroy has struggled thus far in 2013 but may have found something in his last start at Doral. He shot 73-69-71-65 to finish T-8. His second round 69 was his first sub-par round of 2013.
He missed the cut in his first start in Abu Dhabi, was knocked out in the first round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play and walked off the course during the second round at the Honda Classic.
Every golf fan wants to see McIlroy get back to top form and become a worthy opponent for Woods.
Hunter Mahan will defend at the Shell Houston Open. It offers a $6.2 million purse with $1 million to the winner.
The tournament can be seen on the Golf Channel beginning Thursday and Friday. NBC will provide live coverage on the weekend.
