The PGA Tour heads overseas for the fourth event on the 2014-15 schedule. Heat, high humidity and daily showers affect the play at the CIMB Classic, held at the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club.
The 78-man field is limited to the top-60 players available from the final 2013-14 FedEx Cup points list, the top-10 from the Asian Tour Order of Merit and 10 sponsor’s exemptions. The total purse of $7 million is the largest thus far with $1.26 million going to the winner.
Ryan Moore is the defending champion this week. His win last fall at the CIMB Classic helped him compile his best season on tour, with seven top-10 finishes and earning over $3 million.
This is the fifth year for the CIMB Classic. Former winners include, Ben Crane (2010), Bo Van Pelt (2011) and Nick Watney (2012).
Eight players who finished in the top-30 in the FedEx Cup last season are in the field this week in Malaysia. Billy Horschel (1), Sergio Garcia (13), Patrick Reed (21), Gary Woodland (22), John Senden (23), Keving Na (24), Morgan Hoffman (26) and Hideki Matsuyama (28) headline the strong field.
Lee Westwood will make his first start of the season this week. He is coming off one of his poorest years as a professional and is looking to get off to a fast start. He will be joined by other familiar names, Charl Schwartzel, Jason Dufner, Kevin Streelman, and Graham DeLaet.
With a limited field the odds for a high finish for the top-name players are heavily in their favor. FedEx Cup points and a big check await the winner.
