Regions Tradition is Champions Tour Second Major of the Year

Russ Cochran won the Champions Tour tournament last week at the Principal Charity Classic outside of Des Moines, Iowa. He only won once on the regular tour in his thirty-year career, but this was his fourth win on the senior circuit.

He will not have much time to celebrate and enjoy his title, however. The Champions Tour will hold its second major tournament of the year this week at Shoal Creek, Alabama.

This tournament was formerly known as the Bruno’s Memorial Classic. Regions Financial Corporation became involved in 2006 and the event became the Regions Charity Classic presented by Buno’s.

Bruno’s completely dropped out in 2009 and the Regions became the sole sponsor of the Regions Charity Classic.

In 2010 Regions agreed to assume sole sponsorship of the Tradition a major tournament on the Champions Tour and move it to Shoal Creek.

The tournament offers a total purse of $2.2 million with $335,000 going to the winner.

Tom Lehman won the 2012 Regions Tradition and will defend his title. Bernhard Langer finished in a tie for second with Chien Soo Lu from China. Fred Couples finished fourth and Russ Cochran finished in fifth spot.

The Traditions will offer a strong field. All of the top-ranked players on the Charles Schwab Cup race will be in the field.

The Regions Tradition can be viewed on the Golf Channel beginning on Thursday, June 6, and Friday, June 7, 6:30-8:30 PM ET. The Golf Channel will continue its coverage on the weekend Saturday, June 8, and Sunday, June 9, in prime time 7:30-9:30 PM ET.
