Lefty Russ Cochran birdied the last four holes in the final round on Sunday to win the SAS Championship at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, North Carolina.
Cochran shot a pair of 66’s to get to 12-under par after the first two rounds and led David Frost, Kirk Triplett and Bernhard Langer by two shots.
Frost had a nearly perfect 66 on Sunday with six birdies and no bogeys. It was not good enough to match Cochran’s finishing flourish, however.
It was Cochran’s fifth career Champions Tour title and his second win this season. He also won the Principal Charity Classic in June.
He has a total of nine top-10 finishes in 2013 and moves to No. 6 in the Charles Schwab Cup standings with $1.3 million in earnings.
For Frost it was his 13th top-10 finish, as well as, his second runner-up of the year. He also has two wins and two third-place finishes. With over $1.7 million in earnings this year, he is No. 3 in the Charles Schwab Cup standings.
Kirk Triplett had another good tournament with 67-67-68 and finished alone in third place at 14-under par. He is No. 8 in the Charles Schwab Cup standings.
Langer’s one-over par 73 on Sunday moved him down six spots to T-8. Poor final rounds have been a reoccurring theme for him over the summer. He is still No. 2 in the Charles Schwab Cup race, but Frost is gaining fast and only 180 points behind.
Gary Hallberg finished alone in fourth at 13-under par. Anders Forsbrand and Michael Allen finished tied for fifth at 11-under par.
Mark O’Meara posted the best round of the day on Sunday with a final round seven-under par 65. He moved up 33 spots to finish T-11 with Doug Garwood, Bobby Clampett, Kenny Perry, Bill Glasson, Tom Kite and Olin Browne.
Perry continues to lead the Charles Schwab Cup points race. With just two events remaining before the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Harding Park in San Francisco, he appears to have the cup well in hand.
The Champions Tour will stay in North Carolina this weekend for the Greater Hickory Kia Classic.
