The continuing saga of Sergio Garcia and Tiger Woods added another chapter yesterday at the Players Championship.
Golf fans everywhere were anxious to see how Garcia would handle being paired with Woods in the final group on Saturday. It took only two holes for Garcia to become visibly agitated.
Garcia would maintain his one-shot lead when both he and Woods made par at the first hole to open their third rounds.
He hit a very good drive into the fairway at the par-5 No. 2 at TPC Sawgrass, but Woods pulled his drive far left into the trees 50 yards away from Garcia.
Garcia was away and hit a fairway metal attempting to go for the green. He came out of his shot, pushed it badly into the trees on the right and immediately turned and glared in Woods' direction.
When play was suspended for a rain delay, Garcia was asked what had happened during his swing at the second hole. He told the media that Woods pulled a fairway wood from his bag and the large crowd surrounding Woods had cheered in the middle of his swing.
Garcia was forced to chip out of the trees for his third shot and failed to get up and down for his par. The bogey put Garcia and Woods tied at the time.
Garcia and Woods have had some less than pleasant encounters in the past. This is the sixth time that the duo has been paired in the final group and Woods has won all five previous times.
There is always extra commotion from the crowd when Tiger Woods plays. His playing companions are professionals and aware of the problems that are associated in playing with the best player in the world.
It is unfortunate that these types of situations continue to happen to Garcia. Then again if his ego is so fragile that some noise 50 yards away can bother his play, he may want to rethink his focus and overall mental attitude.
