Stacy Lewis won her second event of the 2013 LPGA season and ascended to the No. 1 spot on the Rolex Rankings. Lewis is only the second American-born woman to reach the No. 1 world ranking. Christie Kerr held the No. 1 spot for six weeks in 2010.

The Rolex Rankings were started in 2006 and rank the top women golfers in the world. Asian and European players have dominated the LPGA for over 20 years.

Annika Sorenstam held the top spot until she retired in 2008 and Lorena Ochoa dominated the No. 1 ranking from 2008 to 2010.

Ai Miyazato, Jiyai Shin and Cristie Kerr all took turns claiming the top spot in 2010, but by the beginning of 2011 Yani Tseng had clawed her way to the top.

Tseng had been No. 1 for 109 weeks before Lewis knocked her off her perch. Tseng had commented recently that maintaining the top ranking had become a burden. She won three events in 2012 but struggled throughout the summer months missing several cuts.

Lewis does not appear to be a golfer that will want to yield that top ranking for some time. She battled scoliosis as a teenager and was required to wear a body cast for over seven years.

Lewis won four LPGA Tour events in 2012 and posted 16 top-10 finishes on her way to earning the Player of the Year honors. She was the first American to win that award since Beth Daniel in 1994.

This was Lewis’ second win of the year. She won her last start in Singapore in the HSBC Women’s Champions on March 3.

Tour Commissioner Michael Whan has the LPGA on the upswing and having an American woman at the top of the Rolex Rankings will not hurt his prospects of finding more deep-pocket sponsors and adding more tournaments, especially in the United States.

Lewis is the only American in the world Top-10. There are only five American women in the Top-25 of the Rolex Rankings.

Lewis will bring additional media attention to the LPGA and hopefully encourage more young girls to pick golf clubs and start practicing.
