Tiger Woods Wins WGC-Cadillac at Trump Doral

Tiger Woods won his second trophy of the year and the 17th World Golf Championship (WGC) title of his career at Trump Doral last weekend.

There have only been 41 WGC events held since 1999 and Woods has won 41 percent of them.

He led Graeme McDowell by four-shots and Phil Mickelson and Steve Stricker by five-shots on Sunday at the Blue Monster. Stricker finished runner-up to Woods and was in the 60’s for all four rounds.

Woods started fast with birdies at Nos. 2 and 4. He collected his lone birdie on the back nine at the par-five No. 10. He drove into a fairway bunker on No.16 which resulted in a bogey. His wayward drive on No. 18 forced a lay-up on the difficult par-four that led to another bogey.

He had stretched his lead to five shots but a late surge by Stricker and the two bogeys by Woods made the margin of victory just two shots.

McDowell posted an even-par 72 and fell to third place tied with Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott, who shot the low round of the day with a eight-under par 64.

World No. 1, Rory McIlroy has struggled thus far in 2013 but fired his third sub-par round of the year with a seven-under par 65 on Sunday. He will play only one more event, the Shell Houston Open, prior to heading to Augusta.

This was Woods’ 76th career PGA Tour title and he trails only Sam Snead who amassed 82 career wins. Once Woods surpasses Snead, the only other PGA Tour record of any significance is Jack Nicklaus’ 18 major championship titles.

Woods has been stuck on 14 major titles since 2008 when he won the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines in a playoff over Rocco Mediate.

He will next play at Bay Hill in two weeks and defend at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, where he has won on seven different occasions.

A win at Arnie’s place would give Tiger three wins on the year in just five starts and make him the odds on favorite to win his 15th major championship and fifth Green Jacket next month at the Masters.
