Bubba Watson has not won a PGA Tour event since the 2012 Masters Tournament, just a little over one year ago.
He has only had two top-10 finishes this year in his 12 starts. He was T-4 in the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii at the beginning of the year and was T-9 in the WGC-Accenture Match Play in February.
In his last four starts Watson missed the cut at the Wells Fargo, was T-37 at the Players, finished T-29 at the Memorial and had a T-32 at the U.S. Open.
Watson is the kid in the class that is all over the place and the teacher is suggesting medication for the child to his parents.
Bubba is easily distracted and experiences everything at light speed. Golf Boys’ video shoots, appearances on television, hamming it up with the golf announcers and if he isn’t near the top of the leaderboard his attention to his golf game quickly disappears.
Professional golfers have many distractions. Family and sponsor obligations can definitely compete with practice time. The demands of travel and time spent away from loved ones can affect a player’s score in any given week.
The realization of winning a major and all the celebrity and financial success that goes with it can make a player relax and not spend the necessary time devoted to practice.
The sheer boredom of playing the same golf courses and hitting hundreds of golf balls everyday can make it difficult to maintain maximum concentration on the golf course.
For players like Watson, that are slightly attention deficit and hyper, the challenge to maintain concentration throughout a five-hour round of golf can be a difficult proposition.
Watson will continue to be similar to Phil Mickelson. He must have a fondness for the course or rise to the challenge of being in the lead at a particular tournament to be engaged and play his best.
Given the large prize money available for winning PGA Tour events a player simply needs to have a few top-10 finishes every year to make a ton of money and keep his job on the tour.
Golf fans want to watch Bubba Watson hit huge drives and majestic hooks to win golf tournaments.
He is one of the most talented golfers on tour today. Concentrate Bubba the winners circle awaits.
