For those PGA Tour grinders out there, this week’s Wyndham Championship is for them “Glory’s last shot. The field for the big-money PGA Tour Playoffs will be set after the last putt falls this weekend at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Sandwiched between the PGA Championship and the first leg of the Playoffs next week at The Barclays, the big names on tour tend to skip this event in order to get some needed rest before the last monthly grind off the year. While the biggest of the names in the sport are not going to turn down the chance to win the big $10 million FedEx Cup that will be awarded at The Tour Championship in about a month, for those still trying just to get into the playoffs, that money and prestige would be life altering.
With a lighter than average field this week, it really gives those hovering around 125th in FedEx Cup points a sure chance to either clinch their spot or work their way in and a big potential payday next week at Bethpage Black.
For players who are sitting on the correct side of the bubble such as Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III, Boo Weekley and Trevor Immelman, they must make the cut this week just to ensure they get in the playoffs. After a good PGA Championship, Immelman—currently ranked 122nd—could be a real spoiler in the playoffs provided that he actually makes it in.
Sitting on the outside looking in are such good players as 2009 PGA Champion Y.E. Yang, Gary Woodland who has been hurt a chunk of time this year and the recently hot John Daly.
Going into this week, there is a 14 point difference between Rod Pampling in 125th and Brendan Steele in 126th. It is imperative that those who are sitting just outside the playoffs are aggressive and, most importantly, make the cut.
In its heyday, what was the Greater Greensboro Classic was a pretty big stop on the PGA Tour. Founded in 1938, Sam Snead won this tournament eight times. Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson also claimed wins here. Now, it is like a de facto playoff game for the Tour’s grinders. Like an NFL team at 8-7 going into the last game of the year with a chance to get into the playoffs, the money awarded the next month is just too good to pass up.
With the way the Tour has changed the format next year for getting their tour card, the Wyndham will take on even more importance as those outside the top 125 in points will go instead into the Web.Com playoffs to try and keep their card.
For now though for those who make less than a million a year, this is glory’s last shot.
