It's happened to all of us. You're waiting on a catcher and banking on picking Wilin Rosario, Salvador Perez or Matt Wieters since you figure that they will still be on the board once you have drafted most of your starters.
And then you forget.
You grab a few more pitchers to round out your staff, pick up that middle infielder or some depth in the outfield, and your plan for catcher has gone by the wayside.
Luckily, there are a few options that should be available very late in the draft that you could use to save your skin. Here are some catchers you can grab in the late rounds and still expect decent production.
Yan Gomes - Cleveland Indians
The "Yanimal" played a big part in Cleveland's surprising run to the playoffs in 2013, and could be expected to play an even bigger role for the team this year. Carlos Santana will likely be playing more first base and designated hitter in 2014, giving Gomes the nod as the Tribe's starting catcher.
In 88 games last season, Gomes hit .294 with eleven home runs and 37 RBI. Expect his average to dip a little more in his first full big league season, but definitely consider drafting him if you are in need of a backstop late in the draft.
Dioner Navarro - Toronto Blue Jays
The 30-year-old Navarro is coming off of the best season of his career, hitting .300 with thirteen homers and 34 RBI in 2013 with the Chicago Cubs. He split time with Wellington Castillo last season, but will likely be the starter in Toronto this year with the Blue Jays getting rid of J.P. Arencibia.
Navarro has improved his offensive numbers drastically over the past two seasons. Can the trend continue in 2014?
A.J. Pierzynski - Boston Red Sox
Despite being 37 years of age, Pierzynski still continues to put up solid numbers each season. He has hit 44 home runs over the past two seasons and has put up some of the best power numbers from the catcher's position. He has also hit .270 or above each season since 2008.
This year, Pierzynski will play in a hitter-friendly stadium in Fenway Park, and will be surrounded by more offensive talent on the Boston Red Sox. He can be expected to drive in a decent amount of runs with some big names hitting above him in the lineup.
Carlos Ruiz - Philadelphia Phillies
Many will overlook Ruiz after his disastrous 2013. After missing the first 25 games of the season after testing positive for an amphetamine, he strained his hamstring less than a month after his return. He hit .268 with five home runs in 92 games.
2013, however, featured lots of ups and downs and inconsistencies for Ruiz. Not being able to start the season coupled with missing time due to injury issues could have had a significant impact on the 35-year-old's season even when healthy.
Ruiz hit over .300 in two of the three years leading up to last season, as well as .283 in 2011. His monstrous 2012 season featured a .325 average and a .540 slugging percentage.
If he can stay healthy, Ruiz may prove to be quite the steal.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia - Miami Marlins
Saltalamacchia may be a bit of a gamble, but he showed improvement in all three of his seasons as the starting catcher in Boston.
He hit 25 home runs in 2012, and also raised his average to .273 in 2013.
While he has shown improvement in recent years, there is a chance that he could experience a dip in his numbers in Miami. On the bright side, he will likely be hitting higher up in the lineup with the Marlins than he was with the Red Sox.
