2014 Fantasy Baseball: Late Round Starting Pitchers to Target

Pitching is an essential component to any fantasy team, and the only thing worse than wasting a pick on an underachieving starting pitcher is not having a deep staff.

Luckily, there are some diamonds in the rough this year, and we here at eDraft Sports are here to help you out. Here are some names to look at late in your fantasy draft in order to boast the deepest rotation in your fantasy league.

Sonny Gray - Oakland Athletics

Gray made his Major League debut midway through last season, but he is already showing signs of superstardom in the not-so-distant future. If his dominating playoff performance in the ALDS last season (thirteen innings, three earned runs, twelve strikeouts) was not enough to prove that Gray can handle himself in any situation, his regular season numbers definitely indicated a positve future.

In ten starts, Gray had a 2.67 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP and 67 strikeouts.

Surprisingly, Gray will likely still be on the board in the fifteenth or sixteenth round of your draft.

Zack Wheeler - New York Mets

The young Wheeler was one of the top prospects in baseball heading into last season, and he backed up his reputation with a solid rookie campaign. In seventeen games, he posted a 7-5 record, a 3.42 ERA, a 1.36 WHIP and 84 strikeouts.

Wheeler should be expected to improve on his numbers from last season if he truly is worth the hype, and if he does, he could be a tremendous asset to your fantasy team. He will probalby still be available in the sixteenth or seventeenth round of your draft.

Justin Masterson - Cleveland Indians

Unlike Gray or Wheeler, Masterson has proven himself as a consistent big league starter. He gets many batters out by way of the K, and could seriously boost your strikeout numbers. He punched out 195 unfortunate hitters last season and was a huge part of Cleveland's surprise playoff run.

He also posted a decent 3.45 ERA and an impressive 1.20 WHIP.

Masterson will probably be taken at some point between the fifteenth and seventeenth rounds of your mock draft, so keep an eye on him if you want another starter with all sorts of stuff that makes batters to swing and miss.
