The opening week of fantasy baseball is one of the most exciting weeks in all of sports. There is raw talent that performed above and beyond. Unfortunately there have been some players who haven’t showed their best colors as of yet.
Below is the five best and worst performances thus far in fantasy baseball. The five best has names that some people wouldn’t expect, while the worst performances have some big names on it.
Here is the five players who are considered lost causes for Week 1.
5. Jonathan Lucroy Catcher, Milwaukee Brewers
Maybe he doesn’t have the highest ceiling of all the players you could be drafting but Lucroy should be batting better than he has this season. For fantasy drafters who waited on a catcher thinking Lucroy would be the answer, they have been horribly wrong. He has recorded zero hits in his first thirteen at bats of the season. Obviously, it is early in the year but you would expect a guy who is supposedly a “top ten catcher” too drive in a run, or at least get a hit!
4. B.J. Upton Center Fielder, Atlanta Braves
Upton signed a 5 year, $57 million dollar deal this offseason. Most expected Upton to be the potential leadoff hitter, on a potent Braves lineup. Things have not panned out so far. In four games, BJ hasn’t recorded a single hit and has struck out an unprecedented nine times. Things are not looking good for those who drafted Upton in hopes of stolen bases and runs.
3. Ian Desmond Shortstop, Washington Nationals
Many scouts projected this and the nightmare has become reality. Desmond has looked horrendous over his first four games recording only three hits and batting .158. He did hit one home run which isn’t a bad sign at all. He also has only three strikeouts on the year so things could turn around at anytime for this young shortstop.
2. Albert Pujols First Basemen, Los Angeles Angels
Lets all just face it now, Pujols is a slow starter. He has recorded one hit in his first four games and looks lost at the plate. For those of you who drafted this superstar and expected good numbers from the jump have to be extremely disappointed. Look for Pujols to hit some home runs in the upcoming weeks but as for week one we have to give the machine a D-.
1. Josh Hamilton Outfielder, Los Angeles Angels
In 16 at bats, Hamilton has only one lone hit. He has struck out nine times and does not look like the good ole Josh Hamilton we are all used to. He has only drawn two walks in these games and struck out twice in his first game back in Texas. I warned drafters of Hamilton before the season started and see no reason to disagree with my thoughts to this point.
Those were the five biggest losses of week one. On a more positive note, let’s jump into the top five winners of week one.
5. Todd Frazier Third Basemen, Cincinnati Reds
In five games Frazier has recorded 11 hits in 22 at bats. Along with his stellar .500 average is the number of home runs this guy has hit. Three home runs is a number any coach would like to see through five games of the season. With Joey Votto off to a slow start it is nice to know someone like Frazier can come in and keep the boat afloat. Two thumbs up to this third basemen on an impressive week one.
4. Gerardo Parra Center Fielder, Arizona Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks made a lot of big moves over the past three months. That considered, it must be a dream for the Diamondbacks to see Parra performing how he has. Nine hits in 19 at bats is one thing, but four of those hits have been doubles. This guys is tearing the cover off the ball and making it look easy. For those of you who drafted this crafty center fielder, I tip my hat to you.
3. Adam Jones Center Fielder, Baltimore Orioles
It is not all about home runs and in the case of Mr. Jones, that means even more. Yeah, he doesn’t have five home runs and 15 RBIs but he does have a .526 average with four RBIs and ten hits. This guy does it all. From shagging fly balls to getting on base, Jones is your man.
2. Michael Morse Left Fielder, Seattle Mariners
There was a lot of questions coming into 2013 about Morse. He has let everyone know that it doesn’t matter if he is in Washington or Seattle, he is going to rake. In six games, he has six RBIs and four home runs. The strikeout numbers are a bit high, with six over six games but the other numbers are clearly obvious. Whoever drafted Morse is reaping the benefits as speak.
1. Chris Davis First Basemen, Baltimore Orioles
The overnight sensation, that took the baseball world by storm goes by the name of Chris Davis. He is dominating every pitcher he faces, with four home runs in his first four games. He also has driven in 16 runs, which is the most in baseball history over four games. The fact that he has been drafted in about the 19th round makes this guy a huge commodity for any fantasy team. If this guy can keep hitting like he has, he could be in store for a nice paycheck.
