David Price got paid big time on the free agent market.
According to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe, the ace starter signed a seven-year, $217 million contract to join the fledgling Boston Red Sox on Tuesday.
The $217 million deal, once official, will mark the largest contract ever signed by a starting pitcher in the history of MLB. It will surpass the $215 million contract Clayton Kershaw signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers back in January of 2014.
Price, 30, split time between the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays last season. He earned an 18-5 record with a 2.45 ERA between the two teams, going 9-1 in 11 starts for Toronto following a mid-season trade from Detroit. He finished second behind Dallas Keuchel for the AL Cy Young this past season.
Price started his career with the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East, earning the Cy Young back in 2012.
Price will take over as the Red Sox ace after the team posted a 78-84 record, its second consecutive last place finish back east.
In his career at Fenway Park, Price has posted a 6-1 record with a 1.95 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP in 11 starts.
