“It gets more challenging the higher you go.” Cody Decker spoke these words. “It boils down to whether you accept the challenges or give in.”
You may know Cody for his sarcastic and humorous tweets that have gained a massive amount of followers, but some people tend to forget, he’s a hell of a ball player too.
Decker is a first baseman for the Tucson Padres, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego organization. He is batting .256, with 52 RBI’s, and 68 hits. He just recently hit his 100th bomb as well.
All in all you would think Decker would be having a season to appreciate. However, he is not getting the playing time he deserves, and surely needs to be on a roster spot with the big club Padres.
The former UCLA Bruin has a total of 231 at-bats, in those at bats he leads the entire organization in homeruns (13). The leader in at-bats with his team has 383. Can you imagine the damage Decker could do if he had just as many at-bats?
The San Diego Padres are 46-57 this season in a division that started off strong, but began deteriorating. This is a surprise when sharing a division with the defending World Series Champions San Francisco Giants (46-55). Padres can use some help. Why not Decker? He’s beating out first baseman Yonder Alonso in homeruns. He also beats him out in hits and RBI’s (Alonzo has six homeruns, 64 hits, and 34 RBI’s). And having a guy like Decker in your clubhouse would be exceptionally wonderful.
Cody will make it to the Big Show. Spending time in the minors is part of the journey, this is understandable. However, he has been working hard and has more than proven himself.
Settling will not be an option. When asking Decker about how he feels about working hard and his experience so far, he simply said, “I’m too damn stubborn to give in…”
