Coming off a home sweep and 18-inning loss to the Los Angeles Angels, the Chicago Cubs would have liked good news on Monday. Instead, they've had to place outfielder Jason Heyward on the disabled list.
Heyward got off to a great start this season, his improved mechanics showing positive results in April with a .279/.340/.407 slash line with three home runs. But across 17 plate appearances last week, Heyward had just one hit.
It's likely due to the sprained finger on his right hand that kept him out for the weekend and seems to have hampered him during that poor stretch. Given he already missed time, Chicago was able to backdate his trip on the DL.
We should see Heyward back next week, barring a further update that this is more serious than initially thought.
Until Heyward returns, Javier Baez and Albert Almora should see more playing time. Chicago could shift Ben Zobrist into right field with one of Almora or Jon Jay in center field and Baez at second base.
