As the Detroit Tigers gear up for what might be the last season before their contention window closes, they'll have to start off the season without one of their core hitters. J.D. Martinez underwent an MRI and doctors diagnosed his foot injury has a sprained Lisfranc ligament. While the injury won't require surgery, which would keep him out multiple months, he will miss the month of April.
Martinez will remain in a cast for the next seven to 10 days, then take the next step in the rehab process. With the current timetable, he isn't expected to resume baseball activities until mid-April. After he can do that without any renewed soreness or issues, then he could be ramped up to go on a minor-league rehab assignment for a couple weeks, since he has already missed some time as of late and would be more than four weeks removed from game action.
While Martinez didn't quite live up to the 38 home run mark of the 2015 season, he still turned in an excellent season with 22 home runs, 60-plus runs scored, RBIs and he finished with a batting average over .300. The power dip also came in 150 fewer plate appearances than the prior season, leaving the door open this year for a great power resurgence into the high-20s.
This marks a noteworthy fantasy blow for Martinez's current ADP put him in the top-50, right around the range of Andrew McCutchen, Christian Yelich and Gregory Polanco. While this isn't the worst injury news possible for Martinez, missing the first month of the season will likely push his ADP down 20-plus spots.
With Martinez sidelined for April, it opens the door for Steven Moya to start. A former top prospect, Moya's star faded over the past 18 months and contact issues and an alarming strikeout rate took away the chances he'd ever reach his immense power potential. Across 43 at bats in spring training, Moya mustered just eight hits with no home runs and nine strikeouts. He can remain off the fantasy radar and will go down as another prospect who just never got it all to click.
