Los Angeles Dodgers rookie Cody Bellinger took over as the team's every-day first baseman on Tuesday after veteran Adrian Gonzalez was placed on the 10-day disabled list.
Bellinger, who has starred primarily from the outfield position this season, promptly hit his 17th and 18th homers of the season in a 7-5 win over the Cleveland Indians. Despite hitting at a pedestrian .261 on the season, Bellinger has now put up 39 RBI in just 45 games.
What makes Tuesday's performance that much more stunning is the fact that Bellinger's two homers came off lefties Andrew Miller and Boone Logan. Miller was holding fellow lefties to a .172 average and .238 BABip thus far on the season. Meanwhile, left-handed hitters had posted a .250 average against Logan on the season.
For his part, the rookie is now hitting at a solid .262 against left-handed pitchers. That definitely bodes well for his fantasy relevance moving forward on the season.
