Although dynasty fantasy baseball is not nearly as big as dynasty fantasy football, there is still a huge following. But how often do you see dyntasy fantasy baseball content?
Every year, there are those select teams that are guaranteed playoff spots at this point in the season, but since dynasty fantasy baseball is a year-round game, those who are out of the playoffs still have important decisions to make. Can you steal a player for the future from a team that wants to win this year? That is what you need to do, but who should you target.
Here are five players to target for the future, and see if you can pry these from owners in your league while offering them something that can help them win this year.
5. Matt Harvey, New York Mets
Forget about him? Harvey is one of the best young pitchers in the game, and will be back next season ready to dominate the National League once again for the Mets. A team in the playoff hunt may part with him for help to win this year, so be sure to keep that in mind. Harvey has a 2.39 and 261 strikeouts in 237.2 innings in his big-league career, and could come back even stronger after Tommy John surgery. He is a fantasy ace, and will be worth what you pay for him.
4. Michael Brantley, Cleveland Indians
Brantley has been one of the better players in all of fantasy baseball this year, and he is just breaching the surface of his potential. He is 27 years old, and his batting average has increased to .316 this season, while hitting 15 home runs and stealing 11 bases. Brantley has also scored 67 runs and slugged 25 doubles so far. His value will only go up, as the Indians will have an impressive lineup for years to come. Use the name bias (as described here) to nab him in a trade for the future.
3. Christian Yelich, Miami Marlins
Yelich has quietly been a star since he has come up for the Marlins, and he will only get better. Yelich is just 22 years of age, and he has already collected 162 hits in 574 at-bats in the major leagues. When healthy, he will be able to hit .290 to .300 with 15 to 20 home runs and double-digit stolen bases. Keep in mind that he will be hitting in front of Giancarlo Stanton for the duration of his career in Miami, which always adds fantasy value. Yelich will be one of the better young outfielders in the game next season, so add him now before everyone else realizes his value.
2. Javier Baez, Chicago Cubs
Baez may be up before this season ends, so be sure to buy him before that happens. He will be coming up with the rest of the stacked Cubs farm system and could be the most talented of the bunch. In the minor leagues last season, Baez hit .282 with 37 home runs and 111 runs batted in to go along with 20 stolen bases. He is the complete package, and will be compared to Troy Tulowitzki, which is enough to sell most people in fantasy baseball. Add him if you can, and it will pay dividends right away.
1. Kris Bryant, Chicago Cubs
The legend of Bryant will continue until he reaches the big leagues. Once that happens, expect him to explode onto the scene. Bryant is yet another Cubs prospect that should be ready to play next season. Why is he the top player to add on this list though? He plays third base, and as you know with eDraft's predictive metric, third base is the most scarce position in fantasy baseball. Bryant has plus power to say the least, and could hit above 35 home runs per season in the major leagues. It will be tough to pry him from another owner, but he is worth a ransom.
