Fantasy Baseball: Buy Low on Asdrubal Cabrera

After a lackluster 2013 and a rough start to 2014, many fantasy owners were writing off Cleveland Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera. In the past two weeks, however, he is looking like his old self. Even better, you should expect him to keep this up.

First of all, the shortstop position is very thin in fantasy baseball, and having a good one is a huge boost to your success. Sure, Cabrera is not an All Star, but he will be solid enough the rest of the season to help you out if you need help at short.

Take a look at Asdrubal's stats on the season. Three homers, fourteen RBI, four steals, 27 runs and a .265 batting average. Sure, 27 runs is a pretty good number but the rest of his statistics are just kind of "meh".

Cut it down to the past two weeks and you will see that Cabrera is surging and it is a perfect time to pick him up. Two homers, seven RBI, a steal, fourteen runs and an incredible .396 batting average, as he is 21 for his last 53 at-bats.

This is a side of Cabrera we have seen before, but not in the past year. Pick him up while his overall stats still look "meh".

Another factor that could help you out is that Cabrera may soon hit the trading block if Cleveland stays out of the playoff race, especially with young shortstop prospect Francisco Lindor on the way up. It has been made clear that Cabrera will not return to Cleveland next year because of his impending free agent status as well as Lindor.

Cabrera is playing in a contract year, so you can expect a complete effort out of him, day in and day out. Also, a potential trade and change of scenery could rejuvenate him even more, especially if he goes to a club with a hitters' park.

You will not have to pay much to get Cabrera from your opponent, but he will pay off for you without a doubt.
