My Value Picks
Pitcher
Jesse Hahn, Padres, $7,100: Hahn has been an absolute stud in what has been a very strong Padres rotation this year. He is sporting a 2.1 ERA with a 1.02 WHIP and is striking out more than a batter per inning with 54 strikeouts in 53 innings. His start today comes against an average Minnesota Twins offense in spacious Target Field which should lead to another successful outing for the young right hander.
Catcher
Jason Castro, Astros, $3,200: In what has been a mostly disappointing season for Castro he is looking much better over the last two weeks. Over the last 15 days Castro is still only batting .267 but has managed to hit three homeruns and score as well as drive in seven runs. With Kyle Kendrick on the mound for the Phillies there is a good chance that Castro’s recent power surge continues as Kendrick has pitched very poorly this season and has struggled to keep the ball in the ball park.
First Base
Tommy Medica, Padres, $3,300: Medica is scorching hot at the plate right now. He is batting .471 the past two weeks and has hit three homeruns, driven in nine and scored six runs during that span. After a great first two months of the season Phil Hughes has been much more hittable which has seen his ERA climb above four.
Second Base
Dustin Pedroia, Red Sox, $3,000: By his standards Pedroia has had a sub-par season but is red hot recently. During his five game hitting streak he has recorded two hits in all five and driven in five as well as scoring four runs and hitting one long ball. Pedroia also has at least two hits seven of his last nine games played. This may be the sign of a very good August for the all star second baseman so get him into your lineups while his value remains low.
Third Base
Pablo Sandoval, Giants, $3,100: The Panda just keeps on chugging along collecting another three hits last night and three RBI as he puts his early season hitting woes behind him. The Giants offense hasn’t been very good but the Panda has been. He batted .311 in July and is batting .356 so far in August and at his low price of $3,100 it’s difficult not to put him in you lineup day in and day out.
Short Stop
Starlin Castro, Cubs, $3,200: Castro is enjoying a fine season at the plate and an even better start to the Cubs road trip. In the first three games of the Cubs road trip Castor is 7-13 with three runs scored and three RBI. Now the Cubs travel to Colorado where most hitters see an increase in production at the plate with the thin air of Colorado. While Brett Anderson has been solid since coming off the disabled list, Castro should be fine, as you just don’t what to expect from Anderson night in and night out and pitching in Colorado is never a good time.
Outfield
Denard Span, Nationals, $3,400: span is batting an unreal .389 the last 30 days and has scored 20 runs and stolen 10 bags during that same time frame. He has an eight game hitting streak in which he has collected two hits in his last three games. Batting leadoff for the potent Nationals lineup has lead to plenty of runs scored and a steal of a selection for those of us playing dailies.
