Fantasy Baseball Daily - May 19, 2014

Baseball is rounding first base when it comes to the season (meaning we are one-fourth of the way finished).  Hopefully you all are doing well in your daily fantasy plays with a little help from us at eDraft.  We have a small sample of games that are all night games today with the earliest being the Detroit Tigers at the Cleveland Indians starting at 7:00 PM Eastern Time.  With that game we have just 5 games and 10 teams worth of players to choose from.

We bring you fantasy daily picks for FanDuel.com and if you haven’t signed up yet, be sure to follow this link http://eDraft.com/FanDuel/MLB to receive a 100% deposit bonus on your initial deposit.  This is an amazing deal that you can’t miss so be sure to check it out and make yourself some extra cash.  The cap for FanDuel is $35,000 with only one player at each position like a real MLB lineup (with the exception of outfielders where you can start any three players that are outfield eligible.)

The scoring system for FanDuel is as follows:

Hitters: Single = 1pt, Double = 2pts, Triple = 3pts, Homerun = 4pts, RBI = 1pt, Run = 1pt, Walk = 1pt,
Stolen Base = 2pts, Hit By Pitch = 1, Out (calculated as at bats - hits) = -.25pt
Pitchers: Win = 4pts, Earned Run = -1pt, Strike Out = 1pt, Innings Pitched = 1pt

Good Value Players

Pitcher

Jason Vargas, Royals, $6,200: Vargas quieted a potent Rockies lineup Wednesday to pick up his fourth victory of the season.  He gave up two runs on five hits and struck out eight batters.  Vargas appeared on track to deliver back-to-back seven-inning shutouts for the Royals, but a two-run Drew Stubbs homer with two outs in the sixth spelled an end to those hopes.  It wasn't enough to take Vargas off the course for the win, nor did it mar what has been an outstanding beginning to his season in Kansas City.  Vargas has a 3.00 ERA and has a strikeout-to-walk ratio of nearly 4:1 over his nine starts.

Catcher

Yan Gomes, Indians, $3,000: You may have to pay a premium for the catching position today since there really isn’t much to choose from.  I am taking Gomes based on his recent success at the plate over the past 10 games.  He has at least one hit in eight of those past 10 games, along with eight RBI’s, three homeruns, and eight runs scored.  His daily fantasy production has been outstanding lately and for the price that he is worth, it’s the only steal of the day.  Take Gomes in your lineups unless you save money for a top three player.

First Base

Adam Dunn, White Sox, $3,200: Dunn went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in the White Sox's win over the Astros on Friday.  The home run was Dunn's first since April 24, and it broke a four-game hit-less streak.  Jose Abreu has been unable to play first base the past week because of foot soreness, so Dunn made his fourth start at first in seven games.  Dunn has generally hit better as a position player than a DH in his American League career.  However, Abreu should be back in the field in the coming days, and Dunn back at DH.

Second Base

Gordon Beckham, White Sox, $2,900: Beckham went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI as the White Sox's leadoff hitter Saturday against Houston.  Beckham's May has had shades of his breakout rookie season.  His 86 percent contract rate has resulted in a batting average of .313 with three home runs since the calendar changed.  He is not walking a ton (just four in 94 plate appearances), so there may be a lot of goose egg nights after those hits stop falling.  Adam Eaton's imminent return should knock Beckham from his occasional leadoff role, but he could still hit second on a regular basis.

Third Base

Nick Castellanos, Tigers, $2,500: There is absolutely no good value today on FanDuel for a third basemen.  Your pick will be as good as mine.  All of the top players that are scheduled today are on the disabled list.  My selection though is Castellanos of the Detroit Tigers.  The rookie has seemed to hit a wall of late, collecting just two hits in his last 15 at-bats to drop his season average to .233. He'll got some rest Sunday night, while Don Kelly checked into manager Brad Ausmus' lineup.  Hopefully he will fix his swing and collect a few hits for us today

Shortstop

Ian Desmond, Nationals, $2,900: Desmond connected on his seventh homer of the season in Sunday's win over the Mets.  A rash of injuries have solidified Desmond's place in the heart of the order, and he seems to have taken to the appointment, supplying two homers and seven RBI over his last five games.  Desmond isn't quite stealing bases at the rate he has been the previous few seasons, but the above-average power he brings at shortstop still makes him one of the better fantasy options at his position.

Outfield

Michael Brantley, Indians, $3,400: Brantley went 2-for-3 with a homer, two walks, and two RBI in Sunday's loss to the Athletics.  The homer was Brantley's eighth of the season, making him an unlikely power source on a lineup full of underachievers.  With Nick Swisher and Carlos Santana each turning in another hitless performance Sunday, expect Brantley to remain in the third spot in the order until further notice.

My Lineup: $35,000 Cap

Pitcher – Jason Vargas, Royals, $6,200

Catcher – Yan Gomes, Indians, $3,000

First Base Freddie Freeman, Braves, $3,500

Second BaseIan Kinsler, Tigers, $3,700

Third Base – Nick Castellanos, Tigers, $2,500

Shortstop – Ian Desmond, Nationals, $2,900

Outfield – Michael Brantley, Indians, $3,400
